Flahive Family Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Flahive Family Foundation supports organizations that address maternal health and wellness, women’s health, education, access to clean water and wildlife and habitat conservation in the United States and developing countries around the world.

IP TAKE: With the exception of one or two large international health and established NGOs, the Flahive Foundation largely supports grassroots and local groups in its areas of grantmaking interest. The foundation tends to award project- and program-specific grants that support Flahive family members’ personal passions or interests. While this foundation accepts proposals on a rolling basis, note that only those with a personal connection tend to secure grants here, so don’t hesitate to network and get on this grantmaker’s radar. Though its grants are modest, this is a supportive funder that is easy to work with once you’ve secured funding.

PROFILE: The Flahive Family Foundation was established in 2005 by petroleum engineer Roger Flahive and his wife, Katherine, in order to “give back to society in the areas we believe have the most impact on people around the world.” The foundation prefers to support small, local, grassroots organizations with “programmatic funding, scholarships, and organizational support.” Currently, its grantmaking Focus Areas include Education, Health and Conservation

Grants for Global Development

The Flahive Family Foundation’s global development grantmaking primarily centers around education. While the foundation does not provide detailed information about its priorities, it tends to broadly support efforts to increase access to primary, secondary, and college education, as well as extra-curricular activities and youth development, in Sub-Saharan Africa and Haiti. It especially prioritizes programs that provide opportunities for women and girls. It generally prefers to support smaller organizations like Africaid, Bridge2Rwanda, Kakenya’s Dream and the Colorado Ghana Children’s Fund.

Grants for Global Health

The Flahive Family Foundation’s health grantmaking primarily supports organizations in Africa that advocate for women’s access to quality healthcare, address fistulas, and maternal health. Grant seekers should know that the foundation does not support medical treatment of diseases or scientific research. In the water and sanitation space, the foundation focuses on the access to clean and running water through groups that are digging wells in Africa. A portion of these funds are also directed toward the costs of installing sustainable energy solutions to support the power needs of the newly installed wells. Grantees in this area include the Village Health Partnership, Sky is Not Limited, the Worldwide Fistula Fund and Marie Stopes International.

Grants for Environmental and Wildlife Conservation

The Flahive Family Foundation’s conservation grantmaking centers around the United States, Africa, and South America. It generally supports organizations that work to preserve natural landscapes and animal habitats. It also promotes the sustainable use of game reserves in Africa for hunting, safari, and conservation. Grantees include Conservacion Patagonia, Colorado Trail, the Wild Sheep Foundation, the Safari Club International and the Selous Game Reserve.

Important Grant Details:

Grant amounts generally range from $5,000 to $15,000. The Flahive foundation does not impose explicit geographic restrictions on its grantmaking. However, it seems to prioritize projects in Africa, South America, the United States and Haiti.

The foundation accepts unsolicited applications at any time, but the majority of its grantmaking seems to be driven by personal interests and connections. Application materials are available for download at the foundation’s website but must be submitted via mail.
