Ong Family Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Ong Family Foundation, which primarily seeks to fund programs that are comprehensive, community-based and preventive in nature.

IP TAKE:  Traditionally, the foundation has had a strong web presence (www.ongfamilyfoundation.org) but the site has been down for a while, and the foundation does not seem to have established a new one. Ong appears to be still making grants, so this new lack of transparency may indicate a shift in its approach to philanthropy. Alternate contact information is listed below, so grantseekers can still reach out.

PROFILE:  Founded in 1997, the Ong Family Foundation was established by financier Danny Ong Lee and his wife Stephanie. Lee is a Goldman Sachs veteran who went on to found Aktis Hanxi Group. The Ong Family Foundation has given more than $4 million to some 84 nonprofits, prioritizing the New York City area. The foundation "primarily seeks to fund programs that are comprehensive, community-based and preventive in nature" and focuses on areas such as social services, education, medicine & healthcare and arts & culture.

Grants for Community Development, Health, Education, and Arts and Culture

The foundation primarily funds groups and projects working in human and social services, medicine and health care, education, and arts and culture, particularly regarding the Asian community. Past grantees include Korean American Family Service Center, Central Queens Academy, APEX for Youth, YMCA of Greater New York-Chinatown Branch, and Chinese-American Planning Council. As a general rule, the foundation gives both one-year grants and multi-year grants of up to five years.

Important Grant Details

Grants range from $5,000 and up, but will not exceed $50,000 per year. The application process begins with a brief LOI, and applicants should reach out to the staff. LOIs require a brief description of the organization, including its objectives; a statement of its needs and amount requested; proposed use of "proceeds of any grant or gift received from the Foundation"; as well as, a "proposed mode of acknowledgement or recognition of any grant or gift made by the Foundation."
