Patricia Kind Family Foundation: Philadelphia Grants
/OVERVIEW: The Patricia Kind Family Foundation awards grants three times a year to basic needs and direct service nonprofits in the Philadelphia region.

PROFILE: Patricia Kind was an heiress to the International Flavors & Fragrances fortune, a company co-founded and once chaired by her father Arnold Louis van Ameringen. Arnold and his wife, Hedwig, established their own family foundation, the van Ameringen Foundation, in 1950 to support mental health programs. But Arnold passed away in 1966 and Hedwig passed away in 1996. Kind used her inheritance to establish the Patricia Kind Family Foundation in 1996. The foundation supports nonprofits that help children, adults, and senior citizens obtain food, shelter, clothing, education, and physical and mental health care in Greater Philadelphia.
Unlike some other Philadelphia grantmakers, PKFF gives practical direct service programs and preventive solutions to community problems.
Grant range between $5,000 and 25,000. On average, the foundation awards 180 and 220 grants per year, and the average. Between 2001 to 2016, the Patricia Kind Family Foundation made 470 grants totaling $37,214,749.00 to organizations providing services to those in need in the Delaware Valley. A majority of these grants were made for human services programs, followed by education and physical and mental health. The Patricia Kind Family Foundation gives almost exclusively to Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania. Recent Philadelphia grantees include After School Activities Partnerships to support chess clubs, Philadelphia Mural Arts Advocates for a new initiative, Friends of Farmworkers to support a project for immigrant women, and Supportive Older Women’s Network for a resource center.
It awards grants for one, two, and three-year support for both program funding and general operating support. The foundation's board meets in January, April, and August to make funding decisions each year, and application deadlines are January 15, May 1, and September 15.
To apply for a PKFF grant, applicants proposal’s must demonstrate that it has practical and caring solutions to community problems in the Philadelphia region. The entire application process is conducted online, and grantees must wait at least one year after completion of a grant before applying for a new one. Whether you’re chosen as a grantee or not, you’ll hear back from PKFF within 2-5 weeks after the deadline.
