Beyond Our Borders: Grants for Global Development

OVERVIEW: Beyond Our Borders focuses its global development grantmaking on gender equality, women’s rights, and female empowerment.

IP TAKE: Past grantee lists show Beyond Our Borders tends to support large international organizations that can effect change on broad scale. A few smaller groups make its grants list however, indicating that some funding attention is being paid to women’s empowerment and rights efforts at the grassroots level, as well.

PROFILE: Beyond Our Borders is a group-advised fund established in 1999 through the Women’s Foundation of Colorado (WFCO). While the WFCO focuses on empowering women and girls at the local level in Colorado, Beyond Our Borders focuses on international women’s empowerment efforts. Beyond Our Borders wants to create a world in which women and girls have  "comprehensive human rights," share in gender equality, and are able to reach their full potential. In particular, the fund concentrates its support on women’s comprehensive human rights, gender equality, and women’s and girls’ empowerment. Overall, the fund seeks to “ensure women and girls in other parts of the world are empowered to achieve their full potential and participate fully in society.”

While it is unclear from its website precisely how much the fund has given past grantees, the WFCO typically awards grants between $5,000 and $30,000. Beyond Our Borders does not restrict its giving geographically; however, it does not accept unsolicited grant applications.

Its board meets each May to discuss its grantmaking priorities. At that time, members nominate organizations with which they are interested in working. If the board decides to pursue a nomination, it assigns a sponsor to the nominee. The sponsor then helps to further research the nominee in order to help the board become better acquainted with the nominated organization. The board finalizes grant nominations each September and approves them in October.
