Sall Family Foundation: Grants for Global Development

OVERVIEW: The Sall Family Foundation typically supports global development organizations that work to empower smallholder farmers in developing countries. The foundation also supports large international health organizations that work in developing countries around the world.

IP TAKE: Sall has been slowly growing its grantmaking over the past few years. This is good news for grantseekers, since in the past it supported only a handful of global development groups.

PROFILE: Established in 1993, the Sall Family Foundation is backed by the fortunes of SAS cofounder John Sall and his wife Virginia (Ginger). They are also Giving Pledge signatories, promising to give away at least half of their multi-billion dollar fortune to philanthropy during their lifetimes. Although the couple is well known for their environmentalism and the foundation is a big supporter of environmental causes, the majority of its grantmaking is directed to global development programs and projects.

Without a web presence or program staff, the Sall Family Foundation is not the most accessible of funders. Also, it only awards a handful of grants to global development causes annually. Thus, grantmaking is very competitive. However, it appears Sall is interested in building long-term relationships with its grantees.

Global development grants here do not follow a specific pattern or demonstrate specific areas of focus. In the past, Sall has supported groups working to empower smallholder farmers in developing countries to conquer poverty,  and has supported international global health organizations. Grant amounts range from $10,000 to over $4 million. Most grants, however, fall in the $25,000 to $100,000 range.
