OVERVIEW: Dan Warmenhoven, his wife Charmaine, and family do their grantmaking through the Warmenhoven Family Foundation, which has made around $1.8 million in grants in a recent year. BACKGROUND: Daniel J. Warmenhoven received his B.S.E.E. from Princeton University. He worked for IBM, and has also held senior management positions at Hewlett-Packard. Warmenhoven was CEO and executive chairman of NetApp, a storage and data management company headquartered in Northern California.

HUMAN SERVICES: The Warmenhovens support select human services organizations. Past grantees include HomeFirst, a network of shelters in California's Silicon Valley that provides emergency shelter options; Catholic Relief Services, Uplift Family Services (formerly EMQ FamiliesFirst), and Sovereign Order, a "Christian, chivalric, ecumenical and international community of members, who continue more than 900 years’ tradition of helping the sick and the poor of all nationalities, races and creeds." Possibly worth noting: Dan Warmenhoven attended a Jesuit high school.
HEALTH: The family has given some of their largest funding to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Other past grantees include Autism Speaks, Canary Foundation, the Alzheimer's Association, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
EDUCATION & YOUTH: Charmaine Warmenhoven spent three decades as a special education teacher and administrator and has worked with the Catholic Diocese of San Jose developing and supporting parish-based programs to include people with disabilities. She is also a supporter of Inclusion Collaborative, a program at the Santa Clara County Office of Education that "works to include children with special needs in child care, preschool programs and community activities."
The Warmenhovens, via their foundation, have supported places like St. Agnes School, St. Francis High School, Bellarmine College Prep in San Jose, Child Advocates of Silicon Valley, Educare, ACE Charter Schools, Boys and Girls Clubs, Junior League of San Jose, and First Tee, a youth development program. In higher education, grants have gone to Boston College and Santa Clara University.
OTHER: The family also earmarks funds for global organizations, including Doctors Without Borders and Engineers Without Borders, and for arts organizations like Ballet San Jose.
LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the family to stick with their established interest areas. Charmaine's work in special education in Northern California should be watched carefully, as should the couple's kids. Their daughter worked as a teacher and now works for Junior League of San Jose.
