James W. Bagley

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Lam Research Corporation

FUNDING AREAS: Education, Public Health, Human Services

OVERVIEW: James Bagley and family move their philanthropy through the J.W. Bagley Foundation. Funding has so far been limited to organizations in California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New York and Texas. The foundation supports a range of schools and colleges, public health and human services organizations.

BACKGROUND: James W. Bagley earned bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from Mississippi State University. He spent 15 years each at Texas Instruments and Applied Materials. Bagley went on to serve as chairman of the board and CEO of Lam Research Corporation, a global supplier of silicon wafer processing systems used to manufacture semiconductor integrated circuits. With his family, he established the J.W. Bagley Foundation in 1994. Its giving prioritizes education, health and human services. This funder does not maintain a website, limiting information about its grantmaking goals and practices.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION: Bagley bankrolled the James Worth Bagley School of Engineering at his alma mater, Mississippi State University. He has also supported scholarships at the school. Other higher education grantees include Santa Clara University, Austin College and Texas Tech University. Bagley’s K-12 funding has gone to a broad range of public, private and Christian schools, including Houston’s James Madison High School, Faith Christian School of Grapevine, Texas and Providence St. Mel School in Chicago.

PUBLIC HEALTH: Bagley has supported public health broadly through his foundation. Recent grants have gone to Mississippi’s Tutwiler Clinic, the Dallas Hearing Foundation, the Retina Foundation of the Southwest and the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston.

HUMAN SERVICES: Human services is a smaller area of giving for the Bagley Foundation. Grantmaking in this area appears to prioritize services for children and youth. Past grantees include the Harlem Children’s Zone, Dallas’s Trinity River Mission and the Samaritan House of San Mateo, California.

LOOKING FORWARD: Bagley, via his foundation, tends to offer ongoing support to a select group of grantees located in the states of California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New York and Texas. Given the Bagley Foundation’s low profile, it will be difficult to get on this funder’s radar.
