OVERVIEW: Daniel and Kathryn Sullivan conduct philanthropy through the Kathryn and Daniel Sullivan Foundation, which enables education, conservation and health though volunteerism and philanthropy. Grantmaking has touched a handful of organizations of late.

BACKGROUND: Daniel L. Sullivan graduated from Illinois State University with a B.S. in communication, from West Virginia University with an M.A. in interpersonal communication, and from University of Nebraska - Lincoln with a Ph.D. in organizational communication. Sullivan served in senior human resources leadership roles in the technology sector. In 1992, he joined Qualcomm and rose to the position of executive vice president.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION: Daniel Sullivan was on the board of Bishop’s School and eCivic High, a start up high school housed in the downtown public library in San Diego. The Sullivans continue to support the San Diego Public Library Foundation via their foundation. They’ve supported San Diego State University and University of California San Diego; Sullivan was an adjunct professor and lecturer for more than two and a half decades at these institutions. He’s also supported his alma mater University of Nebraska - Lincoln. Other grantees have included Girl Scouts San Diego and Voices for Children.

CONSERVATION: Sullivan is on the board of The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International, which the family supports. They’ve also given grants to the San Diego Zoo.

HEALTH: Sullivan is a community advisory board member of Scripps Health, which the couple supports.
