OVERVIEW: Pierre Lamond and his wife Christine do their grantmaking through the Lamond Family Foundation. The Lamonds are avid art collectors and support Bay area arts institutions. Other interests include health and education.

BACKGROUND: Born in France, Pierre Lamond graduated with a BSEE and an MS in physics from Toulouse University. He started his career in the late 1950s as an engineer at Transitron Electronics before joining Gordon Moore’s team at Fairchild Semiconductor. Pierre left Fairchild in 1967 to co-found the National Semiconductor Corporation. Lamond joined Sequoia Capital as a general partner in 1981.

ISSUES: 

ARTS & CULTURE: Arts and culture and the main focus areas of the Lamonds’ philanthropy. As avid collectors of contemporary art, art museums in California have been a top priority for several years, with regular support going to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Corporation of the Fine Arts Museums. In performing arts, the Lamonds have made grants to the San Francisco Ballet and the San Francisco Symphony, where Christine serves on the board of trustees.

HEALTH: The Lamonds made a $5.2 million pledge to fund research at the Program in Human Genetics at UC San Francisco. Christine has served on the board of the UCSF Foundation. The couple supports UCSF Cardiology via their foundation. Other grantees include Palo Alto Medical Foundation and Grace Science Foundation, which works to cure NGLY1 Deficiency.

EDUCATION & YOUTH: The couple supports Kipp Bay Area Schools.
