OVERVIEW: Peter and Sheryl Neupert move their philanthropy through the Neupert Family Foundation. Neupert is on the board of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, which the family supports. Other interests include human services and veterans.
BACKGROUND: Peter M. Neupert graduated from Colorado College with a BA in philosophy in 1978 and received an MBA from Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in 1980. Neupert served at Microsoft in various capacities, including as the director of operating systems responsible for shipping OS/2, and later for MSNBC as vice president of News and Publishing for the interactive media group. He went on to drugstore.com, serving as CEO and president, and more recently has worked as an adviser to health technology companies.
ISSUES:
HEALTH: Neupert is on the board of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, which received a seven-figure gift from the couple through their foundation in a recent fiscal year. Support has gone to National Alliance on Mental Illness Seattle.
HUMAN SERVICES, VETERANS & YOUTH: Grantees have included National Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Association; Save the Children; Fisher House Foundation; Puppy Jake Foundation, which provides service dogs to wounded veterans; and Amara, which deals with foster care.
OTHER: The Neuperts have supported ASPCA and Dorobo Fund, which aims to “protect the cultures, people, landscapes and biodiversity of Tanzania through improved livelihoods and conservation.”
LOOKING FORWARD: With the exception of a big recent gift to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, annual grantmaking through the Neupert Family Foundation has been relatively modest lately. Perhaps greater sums will go towards the couple’s established interest areas down the line.
