OVERVIEW: Martin and Andrew Farach-Colton move their philanthropy through the Quinten House Foundation, which gave away around $76,000 in a recent year. The foundation supports the fine and performing arts, medical research, people suffering from disease, and the health and welfare of less advantaged members of society.

BACKGROUND: Martin Farach-Colton graduated with a B.S. from the University of South Carolina, an M.D. from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in 1991. Farach-Colton worked at Bell Labs and at Google. In 2008, he founded Tokutek, a database performance software company, where he served as CTO until its acquisition in 2015. He is a professor of computer science at Rutgers, where he has been on the faculty since 1991. 

ISSUES:

ARTS & CULTURE: Andrew is a musician. The couple has supported Broadway Cares, MoMA, and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and TED Conferences.

MEDICAL RESEARCH: Grantees include Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Planned Parenthood, Tap Cancer Out, National MS Society, and LUNGevity Foundation.

LGBT CAUSES: Farach-Colton is openly gay and has been married to Andrew for many years. Farach-Colton serves on the board of the Ali Forney Center, an LGBTQ community center helping LGBTQ homeless youth. The couple supports the center as well as Gill Foundation and Geeks OUT, a “nonprofit that seeks to rally, promote, and empower the queer geek community.”

OTHER: Farach-Colton has supported alma mater Johns Hopkins. Other grantees include Dartmouth College and Harvey Mudd College in suburban Los Angeles.

LOOKING FORWARD: It’s unclear how much money is waiting in the wings here, but expect the couple to continue modestly supporting their established interest areas.
