A Goldman Veteran Supports New York City Organizations

It's safe to say that John Michael Evans has an interesting—and international—background. Born in Toronto, Evans was educated at Princeton and Oxford. He and twin brother Mark were part of the Canadian men's rowing team that took home the gold in the 1984 Summer Olympic games in Los Angeles. About a decade later, Evans began a long and illustrious career at Goldman Sachs, eventually rising to the role of vice chairman, which he held from 2008 to 2013. These days, Evans serves as president of Alibaba Group, a Chinese e-commerce company.

In his philanthropy, Evans gives through the LME Foundation, whose grantmaking rose in a recent year. Despite his rather global background, Evans' giving heavily favors organizations in New York City.

Evans once was chair of the board of directors of Right to Play USA, which uses the "transformative power of play to educate and empower children facing adversity." Evans strongly supports the organization via his foundation. He has also supported New York City schools like The Brick Church School, The Spence School, and Teachers College, as well as youth organizations like New Yorkers For Children.

Evans also has also provided funds to New York human services organizations, including City Harvest, where he serves as a director, and Robin Hood Foundation, as well as arts and culture outfits like Asia Society, Whitney Museum, and the Met.
