The Play's the Thing for the Princess Grace Foundation-USA
/The Princess Grace Foundation-USA is named in honor of who you think it is: Princess Grace of Monaco, also known as Grace Kelly. The foundation was established by her husband, Prince Rainer, upon her death, and it’s been giving out awards to artists since 1984.
One of the awards the foundation currently dispenses is the Princess Grace Awards Playwriting Fellowship. One winner is selected each year. The prize is $7,500 cash and a fellowship with New Dramatists (who also co-administer the award).
This is a grant for a playwright who hasn’t yet seen a production of her or his work on a large scale—applicants cannot have had their plays produced under anything grander than the Equity showcase code or its equivalent.
But as all creative writers know, being a relative neophyte in one writing platform doesn't mean you don't have a much larger depth of experience in—and interest in—others platforms. Many of these winners also write for other formats, including television and film (1995-winner Kate Robin and 2000-winner Sheila Callaghan are examples), and also novels (2003-winner Jesse Kellerman).
