Fund for Trans Generations

OVERVIEW: The Fund for Trans Generations focuses its grantmaking on organizations that support the rights of transgender, gender non-conforming and nonbinary people.

IP TAKE: The Fund for Trans Generations is run by Borealis Philanthropy. Recent participatory grantmaking has prioritized LGBTQ communities of color across the United States with an emphasis on health and mental health. Recent grants have been for capacity building and leadership development for nonprofits. Grantseekers should expect to wait at least a month to hear back about their funding request.

This is a good funder to know for grassroots organizations focused on trans issues or for those that serve the trans community in other ways. However, key to receiving a grant here is understanding that FTG only backs groups where the director, the majority of the board, and most staff members identify as trans or gender non- conforming.

PROFILE: The Fund for Trans Generations (FTG) is a grantmaking initiative of Borealis Philanthropy, a Minnesota-based “social justice philanthropic intermediary working to resource grassroots movements for tranformative change.” FTG is backed by a diverse group of funders including the NoVo and Arcus foundations, as well as Mackenzie Scott. This fund’s specific goal is to “ support a future where transgender, gender non-conforming, and nonbinary people live with freedom, safety, and self-determination.”

Grants for LGBTQ

Since 2020, FTG has focused on supporting its grantees with Rapid Response Grants “to meet the pressing needs of trans communities of color.” Recent areas of interest include Health and Healing, Education, Anti-violence, Employment, Housing, Criminalization, Leadership Development, Grassroots Organizing, Movement Building, Mutual Aid and Direct Services, and Arts and Culture. Grantees include Nebraska’s Autistic Women and Nonbinary Network, Inc. and San Francisco’s Transgender, Gender Variant, Intersex Justice Project.

Important Grant Details:

FTG grant amounts max out at $10,000 per organization; however, $3,000 to $5,000 is the average size.

  • It has given about $10 million in grants since 2016 to trans-led organizations.

  • FTG makes use of a participatory grantmaking process that includes an advisory committee of five trans and nonbinary leaders who help direct the fund’s decision-making.

The fund’s web page does not offer information about grant applications at this time, but general inquiries may be submitted to Borealis Philanthropy via the organization’s contact page.
