Crawford Taylor Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Crawford Taylor Foundation supports community development, education, health, animal welfare and the environment in the greater St. Louis Area.

IP TAKE: The Crawford Taylor Foundation gets positive reviews for being responsive and building relationships. Its areas of interest are broad, but its grants mainly stay in St. Louis, where the foundation is based. Its open invitation for LOIs and proposals means St. Louis organizations of all sizes have a real shot here.

PROFILE: Established in 1997, The Crawford Taylor Foundation was created by Enterprise Rent-A-Car Company founder Jack Taylor to support organizations in the St. Louis area. Its mission involves “enabling and enhancing programs that create legacies within our St. Louis communities.” Taylor passed away in 2016. His son, Andrew C. Taylor, is the foundation’s director and vice president. Its grantmaking areas are Community Development, Women and Health, Animal Welfare and the Environment in the greater St. Louis Area. It also supports education and arts and culture. Grantmaking is mainly limited to St. Louis, although a few grants each year support causes in other areas.

Grants for Community Development and Arts and Culture

According to the foundation’s website, its Community Development grants “look for programs that enhance St. Louis's reputation nationally and internationally, and make [the] town a richer place to live.” Large sums have supported the Great Rivers Greenway District project, which is working to develop “128 miles of greenways” intended to “make the St. Louis Region a more vibrant place to live, work and play.” Other grantees include Forest Park Forever, the Gateway Arch Park Foundation and the Municipal Theater Association of St. Louis.

Grants for Women and Girls, Public Health, Food Systems, Housing and Education

Crawford Taylor’s grantmaking for Women and Health works broadly with organizations involved in “basic food and shelter,” “health and education” and “initiatives that improve the lives of women and children.”  Education appears to be of particular importance to the foundation, with grants supporting organizations like Boys Hope Girls Hope, the Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis and Ready Readers. Other grants have gone to the St. Louis Area Food Bank, Family Health Care Centers, Beyond Housing and the St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

Grants for Animal Welfare and Wildlife

The foundation’s Animal Welfare grantmaking “seeks out groups whose efforts focus on rescue and rehabilitation, as well as the prevention of cruelty.” The main priority here is protection and support for domestic animals, rather than wildlife. Past grantees include Humane Society of Missouri, Peeps Foundation and the Animal Protection Association of Missouri.

Grants for Environment

The final funding area focuses on the Environment, particularly within St. Louis’s urban and suburban settings. Grants work to “support the preservation of parks and places of natural beauty, along with education and development of long-term environmental solutions.” The foundation has supported Urban Harvest St. Louis, Refuge and Restoration of Florissant, Missouri and U City in Bloom.
