Who has Tad Taube Been Giving His Fortune to in the Bay Area?
/We’ve written before about Taube Philanthropies, the philanthropic vehicle of Giving Pledge signatory Tad Taube, who has largely championed Jewish causes in the Bay Area and abroad. Although Taube has given for arts and culture, health, and public policy, Jewish life is still the name of the game with this funder.
In fact, the foundation recently announced its first major grants of 2017, and every single one of them had a Jewish angle. This suggests that arts and culture, health, and public policy are more like subcategories underneath Taube’s main category of Jewish life, and that foundation grantmaking is incredibly targeted right now.
The majority of grants in Taube’s recent grantmaking round went to Bay Area groups, which should come as a point of interest to local nonprofits. Here’s a rundown of Bay Area Jewish organizations receiving Taube’s support lately:

In addition to the Bay Area grants, Taube also recently supported the New York City-based Jewish Theological Seminary, five groups in Poland, and one group in Israel. In total, the new grants came to over $2 million.
"We are pleased to be able to support the many outstanding Jewish organizations that advance Jewish Peoplehood, here in the Bay Area, as well as in Israel and Poland," said Tad Taube, who serves as chairman of the foundation. "It is most satisfying to be able to help community organizations and their leadership enhance their work and their impact in Jewish Peoplehood programming."
For the foreseeable future, Taube grantmaking is centered on institution-building, scholarship, heritage preservation, arts and culture, and education—all with a Jewish base. More recent topics of interest under that umbrella have been genealogy projects, emergency preparedness, and general operations.
The Bay Area businessman has really been paying a lot of attention to local causes in the San Francisco Bay Area lately, and this continues to be the primary focus of grantmaking. But it’s important to note that Taube Philanthropies is made up of two separate grantmaking foundations. The Taube Family Foundation is the one with the big Bay Area focus, and the Taube Foundation for Jewish Life & Culture has a more global approach. Taube has been increasingly interested in collaborative efforts with other donors.
