Want to Attend a Health Conference? This Funder Can Help

NYSHealth tackles a lot with its grantmaking—patient choice, diabetes prevention, rural health, healthy food, and even affordable housing. But through it all, one of this funder’s biggest topics of concern is empowering healthcare consumers. This involves making sure New Yorkers have the resources and support they need to make the best decisions about their own care, and local nonprofits play a huge part in providing this type of consumer education.
In turn, it's important for these nonprofits to stay up with the latest developments in the field. NYSHealth understands this, which is why it has released a new RFP to sponsor conference participation that relates to empowering healthcare consumers. Nonprofits and other types of low-resource organizations can apply for a grant to attend a local, state, or national conference that relates to this topic. And the foundation is willing to support groups that already work in this arena, as well as others who don’t yet but are interested in getting involved.
This is a pretty unique opportunity in terms of health grantmaking, since most private and community foundations don’t pay for conference attendance. Typical costs for health conference attendance ranges from a couple hundred dollars to well over $1,000. It’s the understaffed, underfunded, and overworked small nonprofits that can often benefit the most from conferences to learn new strategies, network, and gain momentum. But these are the groups that can’t typically work those attendance fees into their budgets.
Applications for this opportunity are being accepted on a rolling basis and accepted via online submission. All applicants must be located in the state of New York, and grants will be awarded for up to $2,000 per person or $4,000 maximum for two attendees. This money can go towards everything from the registration fees to travel, lodging, and incidentals. Examples of the types of conferences that NYSHealth wants to see you going to include the Institute for Patient- and Family-Centered Care’s Conference and the Beryl Institute’s Patient Experience Conference.
