PROFILE: Established in 1964, the Baton Rouge Area Foundation (BRAF) is a community foundation based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It serves more than 600 fund donors and works with donors to award over $40 million to local nonprofits each year. Grants for Education, Public Health and Access, Women and Girls, and Community Development

The Baton Rouge Area Foundation awards competitive grants to nonprofits in two ways. One way involves applying directly for grants through programs created by supporting organizations. The other way involves donors and advisors recommending grants to nonprofits from their charitable funds, but organizations cannot directly apply for these opportunities. The Credit Bureau of Baton Rouge Foundation held at BRAF supports programs for personal money management and understanding the consumer credit risk system. The Farrnbacher Memorial Fund supports the eyecare needs of people in East Baton Rouge. The E.J. and Marjory B. Ourso Family Foundation funds education, health, human services, and religion. The Powell Group fund supports arts and humanities, community development, education, environment, health care, and human services. The Turner Industries Fund supports local education, health, the arts and community development efforts. Finally, the Young Women’s Christian Organization Fund aims to improve the lives of local women and girls.

Grantmaking focuses on Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but some funds also support groups in Lake Charles and New Orleans in Louisiana, Port Arthur, Houston, Corpus Christi, and Paris in Texas, and Decatur, Alabama. Past local grantees include Mid City Studio and Baton Rouge’s library system.
