George Abell achieved success in the oil and gas industries of West Texas and was active in numerous civic and community endeavors. Gladys Abell and involved in many cultural and civic causes, such as museums and women’s groups. The couple is deceased with no living heirs, so their foundation is run by a board of trustees. The foundation aims to "continue the philanthropy of George and Gladys Abell, with emphasis on improving the lives of people in the Permian Basin.” It funds local efforts for education, health, human services, arts and culture, and community development.
