OVERVIEW: Eric Wepsic conducts his philanthropy through the Tansy Charitable Foundation. Available tax filings reveal that the foundation awarded $10 million in grants in 2018. Wepsic sits on the board of National Resources Defense Council, which he strongly supports. He has also supported his alma mater Harvard. 

BACKGROUND: Eric K. Wepsic graduated with an A.B. and an A.M in mathematics from Harvard University. He joined D.E. Shaw in 1994 and is currently a managing director and a member of the executive committee, in which capacity he jointly supervises the firm's worldwide asset management businesses.

ISSUES:

ENVIRONMENT: Wepsic sits on the board of National Resources Defense Council, to which he gave $3.5 million in one recent fiscal year.

EDUCATION: Wepsic primarily supports his alma mater Harvard University, but has also made several gifts to Boston University. He endowed a fellowship at the Hertz Foundation, which "awards fellowships to Ph.D. students in the applied physical, biological and engineering sciences." Wepsic is a two-time winner of the internationally renowned William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Examination, and a gold medalist in the 1987 International Mathematics Olympiad.

OTHER: Wepsic has donated over $1 million to the Carter Center, and has also supported Partners in Health, a Boston-based nonprofit health care organization.

LOOKING FORWARD: Wepsic is still very much engaged in business and his foundation has so far focused on a handful of organizations annually. Perhaps giving will deepen in the coming years.
