OVERVIEW: Sanjay and Anjna Motwani conduct their philanthropy through the Sansar Capital Foundation, which, according to available tax filings, gave away around $26,000 in 2018. Grantmaking focuses on education in Southeast Asia as well as in New York City.

BACKGROUND: Sanjay Motwani graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with degrees in finance and Oriental Studies/Japanese and an MBA from INSEAD Paris. Motwani worked at Fidelity Investments and Lehman Brothers. He was with Kingdon Capital Management from 1997 to 2005 and serves as the president and portfolio manager for Sansar Capital.

ISSUES:

GLOBAL & EDUCATION:. The couple helped build Bakong Motwani Junior High School in Cambodia through Caring For Cambodia, and have funded science centers and girls’ educations projects for Pratham, an NGO focused on educating children across India. Anjna sits on the board of Pratham.

Stateside, the couple have supported Insead Management Education Foundation, University of Pennsylvania, and MIT, Anjna’s alma mater.

OTHER: Sansar Capital Foundation grantees include The Guggenheim, SeriousFun Children's Network, and Beyond Type 1, “a new brand of philanthropy leveraging the power of social media and technology, changing what it means to live with Type 1 diabetes.”

LOOKING FORWARD: The couple’s giving through Sansar Capital Foundation has been modest lately, but more money may move through the foundation in coming years. NGOs in Asia seem to be a priority.
