OVERVIEW: Mark Moore and his wife Brenda founded the Mark and Brenda Moore Family Foundation in 2010. The foundation supports advances in healthcare, education, the arts and Christian Evangelism. The foundation keeps a low profile and recent public tax records do not appear to be available.
BACKGROUND: Mark Moore received a B.S. in accounting from SUNY at Buffalo and a masters in business from St. John's University. Moore served as CFO for both CONXUS Communications and USA Mobile Communications. He went on to co-found mindSHIFT Technologies, a leading IT outsourcing and cloud services provider.
ISSUES:
HEALTH: Mark Moore has been outspoken about a stroke he suffered a few years back, despite being in good health and living an active lifestyle. The stroke served as an awakening of sorts and inspired the foundation. As Moore puts it: "I could have kept doing those things after I recovered. I simply chose not to. Sometimes in life, you’re given a second chance. I became convinced that this was my calling to do something else.”
Moore sits on the INOVA Health Care Service Board and INOVA’s Mount Vernon Hospital Quality Board. The Moores support the Inova Health System, home to the Mark and Brenda Moore Patient Tower at the Inova Mount Vernon Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia where Moore himself was treated for his stroke. The foundation also funded the radiology unit of INOVA Loudoun Hospital’s emergency department and Moore and Brenda co-chaired for INOVA’s Mount Vernon Hospital’s Steering Committee. The foundation also has supported the Mid-Atlantic Affiliate of the American Heart Association.
EDUCATION & YOUTH: The foundation supports the Posse Foundation which provides four year college scholarships to deserving students. The foundation provides a yearly endowment to Antioch Baptist Church youth pursuing continuing and higher education. Brenda also sits on the board of Hopkins House Early Childhood Learning Center.
ARTS & CULTURE: The Moores are founding donors of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, having given at least $1 million. They also support places like Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and National Symphony Orchestra.
RELIGIOUS: The Moores have supported places like John Leland Center for Theological Studies.
LOOKING FORWARD: The Mark and Brenda Moore Foundation keeps a low profile, and it is not exactly clear how to get in touch or how much money is distributed annually. According to Moore, the foundation pledges to give away “$500 million to the causes that are dear to their hearts, including health care, education, music and the arts. “ This spells good news for grant seekers, particularly those working in the Mid-Atlantic.
