OVERVIEW: The W.P. & Bulah Luse Foundation primarily supports Dallas nonprofits, in the areas of education, health, and human services.

IP TAKE: Dallas-based social services agencies that address basic needs, as well as Catholic schools in the area, should get to know this family funder.

PROFILE: Established in 1947, the W.P. & Bulah Luse Foundation is a private foundation in Texas. W. P. Luse was a self-made oil prospector and driller in Texas. Bulah Luse created this foundation to support causes that she and her husband cared about during their lifetimes. The foundation’s broad grantmaking topics of interest are education, health, and human services.

Grants for K-12 Education, Public Health and Access, and Community Development

The Luse Foundation is managed by Bank of America and does not have its own full-time staff. Grantmaking addresses broad interest areas in the Dallas area. In the past, the foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to the parent-child education program at AVANCE-Dallas. It has been a funding partner for Kids U and Attitudes and Attire, donated at least $3,000 to Legal Hospice of Texas, and given at least $5,000 to Alley’s House. Past support has gone to Community Partners of Dallas to benefit abused children, the Saint Plus X Catholic School for preschool programs, and Sons of the Flat for patient and family support at Parkland Hospital. Many grants have gone to Catholic schools lately. Program support tends to be more common than general operating support or capital support.

Important Grant Details

A majority of recent grants have been between $5,000 and $10,000. The funder gives priority to nonprofits that address underserved populations and that serve the people of Dallas. Although the majority of these grants have gone to Dallas and Fort Worth groups, support has also gone to Houston, San Angelo, San Antonio, Austin, Midland, and Tyler.

The Luse Foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. There are two grant application deadlines each year, June 1 and December 1. Most of the grants are one year in duration. Grantees must skip two years before reapplying. It typically takes three or four months to receive a funding decision after applying. To discuss the application process or for questions about this foundation, contact the Texas office staff of the bank at tx.philanthropic@ustrust.com. The foundation’s phone number is 800-357-7094.
